When most people think of Africa words like "luxury" and "ultra-rich" usually don't come to  mind. However, Nigerian businesswoman Reni Folawiyo wants to change all that.

Folawiyo, A former lawyer turned designer, created Alara - a four-story building housing a mix of African fashion, design, art and cuisine, out of the desire to redefine modern African luxury.

Africa currently has the fastest-growing middle class in the world. New five-star hotels are being constructed. Prices for real estate in fashionable and luxurious districts in cities like Lagos and Accra match those of western cities. These high prices are set to satisfy the big spending appetite of the mega rich.

Alara is located in Lagos Nigeria. According to Forbes magazine, Nigeria houses 11 of Africa's biggest multimillionaires. Talk about a perfect match.

Alara means " wondrous performer," in the Nigerian language Yoruba.

The luxury concept store was designed by highly sought-after Ghanaian-British architect David Adjaye. It features an exhibition-style retail space, a restaurant and terrace lounge, and an art gallery.

Alara stocks clothing, accessories and jewellery from a wide-range of western brands and pan-African designers such as Stella McCartney, Givenchy, Cyrus Kabiru, Zashadu and our personal favourite Stella Jean just to name a few.
